We can scarcely believe that Project Fierce Chicago’s inaugural year has come to a close. It was an eventful, inspiring and challenging one for us, and we’re looking forward to the year ahead!
In April of last year, over 200 individuals made generous donations to our Indiegogo campaign, and helped us successfully raised 10,000 in one month! The enthusiastic support made it clear that youth homelessness is a fundamental issue that our communities are invested in addressing.
The months that followed involved a healthy dose of work for the leadership team and collective members, the creation of both a media team and a fundraising team and a community meeting to introduce PFC to folks in the community and to solicit input. We also established our organizational infrastructure, further articulated our values and mission, and created timelines and work plans for achieving our goals.
Since launching, PFC’s membership has tripled in size, we have obtained non-profit status, successfully raised a third of our first year’s operating budget and have received a great deal of community support. We have connected with fierce activists and community organizations, engaged in extensive research on funding and affordable housing and have been featured by a variety of media outlets. We can’t neglect to mention, we also had loads of fierce fun at some fabulous soirees organized by our volunteers and community partners!
December was particularly full of festive fundraising and community-building, with Caroling for a Cause, PFC’s Holiday Happy Hour, Slo ‘Mo: A Soulful Holiday Shindig, and David Cerda’s Christmas Dearest collection for the project. In December alone, we raised around $3,000! All of our progress in 2013 has been motivated and supported by all of you, and we are so grateful!
For 2014, we have our eye on one primary goal – to purchase a foreclosed building to convert into transitional housing! We aim to make this purchase by summer of 2014, and we need the help of all of you and your networks to do it.
If you haven’t already, please consider becoming a sustainer by donating to the project monthly. We are 100% volunteer-run so ALL of what you give directly funds the work (not many organizations can boast this)! Also, please spread the word to everyone who will listen. The more people we reach, the sooner we will be able to provide a warm, safe and affirming home for young people in our communities.
Many heartfelt thanks to all of you who have donated your time, energy and resources to Project Fierce Chicago this year. We are incredibly grateful, and will continue to work, with your support, to ensure the success of the project!
